How to Cite an E-Book in APA

Citing an e-book in APA style is a straightforward process designed for consistency and clarity. The key components include the author’s last name and initials, the publication year, the e-book title in italics, edition details (if applicable), the publisher’s name, and the URL.

  • Contributor Information: Includes  the author’s name(s), groups, organizations, or, sometimes, when there’s no known author.
  • Year of Publication: Enclose the publication year in round brackets.
  • E-Book Title in Italics: The e-book title should be in italics.
  • Edition Information (if applicable): If it’s not a first edition, include edition information in round brackets after the title.
  • Publisher Information: Include the name of the publisher. If there are multiple publishers, separate them with a semicolon.
  • URL: Include the full URL of where the e-book is located.

If the e-book comes from an academic database and doesn’t have a URL, the reference stops after mentioning the publisher. The database name is left out. In these cases, the reference is just like one for a regular printed book.

Look for a DOI or a stable URL when citing an e-book in APA. These provide a permanent link to the book and help ensure others can access the same source. If available, include this information in your citation.

If the e-book is not a first edition, make sure to include edition details in your citation. This information goes in parentheses after the book title. It helps readers know if they are looking at a revised edition or a specific version of the e-book.

If there’s no known author, begin the citation with the italicized book title. Include the edition or volume number, publication year, URL, and maintain the same citation structure as when citing an e-book with an identified author.
